Common law marriages are not legally recognized in the state of Florida. However, even if two parties are not married and do not have a recognized common law marriage, they may still have certain rights related to their relationship. The state of Florida recognizes certain property rights related to relationships; for example, if two parties had a joint bank account or owned a home together, they may have certain rights related to the property that they were able to accumulate. Additionally, the state of Florida does recognize certain rights related to decisions made regarding the well-being of each other, such as medical care decisions. Overall, common law marriages are not recognized in the state of Florida. In order to be validly married, a couple must enter into a legally recognized marriage ceremony. However, the state does recognize certain rights related to property and decisions made regarding the well-being of each other.
