How do I obtain a medical marijuana card?
In order to obtain a medical marijuana card in the District of Columbia, you must first have a qualifying condition. Qualifying conditions include HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and chronic or debilitating diseases or conditions that cause severe, persistent, and intractable symptoms. Once you have a qualifying condition, you must then obtain a written certification from a licensed physician that states the patient has the condition and that the use of medical marijuana would be beneficial for their treatment. This certification must include the name and address of the physician. Once you have the written certification, you will then need to submit a registration application to the Department of Health. The application must include your name, address, and date of birth, along with the name and address of your physician. Upon approval of the application, you will be issued a medical marijuana card. The card will be valid for up to one year, at which time you will need to reapply in order to maintain your medical marijuana card. You will be issued a new card each year and will need to renew the card each year to maintain the card’s validity. You will also have to renew your written certification from your physician annually, in order to maintain a valid medical marijuana card. It is important to note that it is illegal to possess, use, or distribute recreational marijuana in the District of Columbia. The medical marijuana program is strictly for medical purposes only.
