What is copyright?
Copyright is a form of legal protection for original works of authorship. It is an exclusive right given to the creator of an original work that prevents others from copying, distributing, performing, or publicly displaying the work without permission. In the state of Florida, federal copyright law is set forth in the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976. Under this law, all original works of authorship including music, literary works, photographs, computer software, and other works of authorship are protected by copyright law. Copyright protection applies to any original expression that is fixed in a tangible medium. This includes both published and unpublished works. The original creator of a work is the one entitled to copyright protection. This means that the author or creator of the work automatically owns the copyright upon creation of the work. Copyright protection grants authors and creators exclusive rights to their works. This means that a copyright owner can control how their work is used and reproduced. This includes the right to reproduce the work, create derivative works, distribute copies, display the work publicly, or make a profit from it. Copyright protection in the state of Florida lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years.
