What is copyright?

Copyright is one of the most important concepts in media law in Tennessee. It is a form of legal protection given to the creators of original works of expression. Copyright gives creators the right to control how their works are used and how they are distributed. Copyright applies to works such as books, music, photos, art, and performances. Under copyright law, creators own exclusive rights to their works. This means that no one else can copy, distribute, or display the work without first getting permission from the creator. These exclusive rights are for a limited time, usually for the life of the creator plus an additional 70 years. In order to get copyright protection, the works must be recorded in some way. This could be in published form or in the form of a recording or video. Additionally, the works must fall under the definition of original expression. This means that the works must be creative and unique in order to qualify for protection. Copyright law is very important for creators in Tennessee because it gives them the exclusive right to benefit financially from their works. Without copyright, anyone could use their works without compensating the creator. Copyright protection also allows creators to control how their work is used and to enforce their rights if their works are misused.
