What are the laws regulating data privacy?
Data privacy refers to the protection of personal information collected by companies or organizations. In Washington, data privacy is regulated by state and federal laws. The Washington Privacy Act (WPA) is the main law regulating data privacy in the state. The WPA requires companies and organizations to disclose what types of personal data they collect, as well as how they use it and with whom they share it. It also gives citizens the right to access and delete their personal data. Additionally, the WPA requires businesses to have privacy policies that explain how they collect and use data. At a federal level, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies to businesses that collect and use the personal information of citizens of the European Union (EU). The GDPR mandates that organizations that have access to EU citizens’ personal data must protect it from unauthorized disclosure and provide them with certain rights and information about their data. In addition to the state and federal data privacy laws, Washington also has security breach notification requirements for companies. If an organization experiences a data breach, it must notify affected individuals and the state Attorney General within 45 days of discovering the breach. Overall, the laws in Washington ensure that citizens’ personal data is kept private and secure.
