What is the role of the internet in media law?
The internet has had a major impact on media law in Georgia. Due to this increased presence of the online world, individuals are able to share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences with a much wider audience than ever before. This new ability has created a number of legal and ethical questions in regards to how we use the internet. Media law is the set of laws which regulate what is and is not allowed in terms of the content of material shared online. This includes laws that protect certain types of speech, such as laws against defamation and libel, and laws that govern how content can be used, such as copyright law. For example, in Georgia it is illegal to post copyright material without the permission of the copyright holder. In addition, media law also protects individuals from online harm. Laws have been introduced to protect children, such as the Georgia Child Online Protection Act, which sets out restrictions on the types of information that can be shared about children. Moreover, laws have been introduced to protect people from online harassment or cyberbullying. Ultimately, the internet has become an integral part of media law in Georgia. Media law works to ensure that individuals can publish and share their content with the online world in a way which is safe, legal and ethical.
