What is a court-martial arraignment?

A court-martial arraignment is the formal reading of criminal charges in the military justice system. In New Hampshire, it is the first step in a court-martial process. During this process, the accused is informed of the charges brought against them. The accused is also given an opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty to the charges. The court-martial officer will then decide whether or not to accept the plea or proceed with the case. The arraignment is an important step in the military justice process and is regulated by the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). All members of the military are subject to court-martial proceedings if they are accused of a crime that violates the UCMJ. Once a court-martial arraignment has occurred, the process will move forward with trial, appeals, and sentencing if the accused is found guilty. The purpose of court-martial arraignments are to ensure that any criminal charges brought against a member of the military are heard in a fair and transparent manner. A court-martial arraignment is an important opportunity for the accused to understand the charges they face, and determine whether or not they want to pursue a plea of guilty or not guilty. It is also a chance to determine what type of defense they may wish to present at trial.
