What is a balloon payment?

A balloon payment is a one-time, lump-sum payment that is made at the end of the term of a mortgage loan in Texas. The large payment is usually made to pay off the remaining balance owed on the loan. The balloon payments are usually calculated on a 30-year mortgage loan but can be adjusted to fit the specific length of the loan. When a borrower takes out a balloon payment mortgage loan, they must be aware that their monthly payments will be much lower than a traditional loan. This can be attractive to a borrower, as it allows them to use the extra money for other expenses. However, the major disadvantage of a balloon payment loan is that the borrower must pay the balloon payment in full once the loan matures. This can be a financial burden for a borrower if they are not prepared for the large lump-sum payment. Balloon payments can provide a borrower with a more affordable option for their mortgage loan but they must understand the risks associated with the loan. Borrowers should take time to do research and calculate how much they will owe when the loan matures so that they can be prepared for any large financial payments that may come due at the end of the loan.
