What is maritime law?
Maritime law is the body of law that governs activities and operations that take place on or near navigable bodies of water, such as oceans, lakes, and rivers. It encompasses a wide variety of legal matters and legal processes, including contracts, admiralty claims, marine insurance, maritime liens, maritime employment, collisions at sea, and cargo and ship repair. It is an international, federal, and state law, with a wide range of applications in Tennessee. Maritime law deals with different areas of legal regulation, such as the protection of navigable waters, the advancement of maritime trade, and the safety of seafarers and vessels. Maritime law enforcement is largely conducted by the United States Coast Guard, which is responsible for enforcing safety regulations and responding to search-and-rescue cases. Maritime law also applies to the shipping industry, which is subject to a variety of regulations, including environmental protection, labor, and safety. Finally, maritime law also applies to charter vessels, such as recreational boats and ferries. These vessels must comply with federal regulations related to safety, navigation, pollution, immigration, and tariffs. In Tennessee, local boating laws may also apply.
