What is the law of towage?
The law of towage is a maritime law that applies to all vessels and barges that are being towed or pushed by another vessel and is often referred to as “The Towage Rule”. This law is in place in Florida to ensure that the towing vessel takes part in a safe and proper manner. The towage rule outlines the responsibilities of the towing vessel to ensure the safety of other vessels in the water, and to protect the interests of the vessel being towed. The towage rule states that the towing vessel should refrain from any dangerous act that could jeopardize the tow, other vessels, or people. The tow must also be conducted with consideration for the seabed and environment. The tow must also abide by the rules of navigation and must be operated with reasonable care and skill. The towing vessel is also responsible for the safety of the crew and passengers on board the tow. The tow must be properly fitted out and the crew must be competent and experienced in safely maneuvering it. The towing vessel is also responsible for the berthing or mooring of the tow at the agreed upon destination. Additionally, the towage rule states that the towing vessel is liable for any damage caused by the tow as a result of the towage. This includes any damage that it causes to other vessels or property in the water, as well as any loss of life or injury that may be sustained. The towing vessel is also liable for any damage caused to the tow while in its care.
