What international conventions are related to persons with disabilities?
International law relating to persons with disabilities is governed by a number of international conventions. The most important of these is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This convention sets out the rights of persons with disabilities, including access to justice, health care, education, and employment, the right to live independently and with dignity, and the right to participate in political and cultural life. In addition, the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Convention on Workplace Accommodations for Persons with Disabilities (ILO-C179) sets out obligations on employers to make reasonable workplace accommodations for persons with disabilities, and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Convention on Accessibility in Maritime Transport (IMO-C180) sets out standards for access to ships and the built environment for persons with disabilities. The International Maritime Organization has also adopted the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention). This convention sets out standards for the training and certification of seafarers, including persons with disabilities. Finally, the International Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) sets out strict rules on the protection of persons with disabilities from enforced disappearance, torture, or other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. All of these conventions are relevant to maritime law in the District of Columbia.
