What are the criteria for registering to vote in a municipal election?
In Virginia, there are several criteria you must meet in order to be eligible to vote in a municipal election. To start, you must be a United States citizen, and you must also be at least 18 years old or older on the day of the election. You must also be a resident of the municipality, and if you have moved to a different municipality within the last 30 days, you must report the change in writing to the local election office in the municipality you are now living in. Additionally, you must not have been convicted of a felony, or declared legally incompetent by a court. Before an election, Virginia’s local election officials must provide a list of eligible voters to all relevant parties. To register to vote, you must submit an application and provide proof of identity. This can be done online, in person, or by mail. When submitting your application, you must provide your name, address, social security number, and the last four digits of your driver’s license or state-issued identification card. If you are registering to vote for the first time, you must also provide proof of your identity and Virginia residency. Acceptable documents for these purposes include a current and valid Virginia driver’s license, a current utility bill with your name and address, or a valid student identification card with a photo. . Once all of the necessary documents are submitted, your application will be processed and you will be officially registered to vote.
