What is the Indian Health Care Improvement Act?
The Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) is a U.S. federal law that provides a comprehensive range of health care services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The IHCIA was enacted in 1976 as part of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. It aims to improve and expand the existing Indian health care system in the United States. The IHCIA not only strengthens the quality of care, but also provides more funding for tribal health facilities. In Hawaii, the IHCIA provides additional assistance for Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians. The IHCIA established a special Hawaiian Incentive Program within the Indian Health Service, which provides funding for Native Hawaiian health care facilities. In addition, the IHCIA also authorizes health care provider reimbursement for covered services to Native Hawaiian health care facilities. This allows Native Hawaiian health care providers to be reimbursed for services provided to eligible Native Hawaiians. Overall, the Indian Health Care Improvement Act helps improve and expand the existing Indian health care system in Hawaii. It provides additional funding for tribal health facilities, authorizes health care provider reimbursement for covered services, and provides special Hawaiian Incentive Programs. These programs all work together to ensure Native Hawaiian health care providers have increased access to quality health care services.
