What is the Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act?

The Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act (IETRS Act) is a federal law that was created to help tribally-governed organizations in Utah to increase employment, improve job skills, and increase the economic opportunities available to Native Americans. The IETRS Act provides funds for tribal-governed organizations to create and operate employment and training programs designed to meet the needs of their local Native American populations. These programs provide job training and placement services, support services, and educational and other assistance needed to help Native American individuals develop the skills that they need to obtain and maintain meaningful and self-sufficiency through gainful employment. The IETRS Act also requires that tribally-governed organizations who receive funding must design and operate their programs, in part, with the input of Indian tribal representatives. Furthermore, the programs are required to address the needs of Native American youth, non-senior adults, senior adults, and Indian reservations with particular attention to the needs of individuals who are economically disadvantaged. The IETRS Act provides a unique opportunity for Native American individuals in Utah to receive services and assistance that are specifically designed to meet their needs and, as a result, help them get and maintain meaningful employment.
