What is the Indian Education Act?

The Indian Education Act is a California law designed to provide a higher quality of education to Native American students. It was passed in 1992 and provides additional funding, support and resources to schools that serve Native American students. The Act seeks to close the educational attainment gap between Native American students and non-Native American students by providing a culturally appropriate, culturally responsive education for Native American students. The Indian Education Act is based on the principle of self-determination by recognizing the unique rights of Native American families to direct their children’s education. It incorporates a comprehensive and equity-focused curriculum, which includes traditional and contemporary expressions of Native American language, history, culture and values. It also ensures that Native American students have access to extracurricular activities, including sports, music and other arts programs. The Indian Education Act is also intended to support improved graduation rates and opportunities for post-secondary education. It provides funding for a wide range of support services, such as culturally-based curricula, mentoring programs, after-school programs, and culturally-relevant career and college readiness activities. It also offers professional development opportunities to teachers and school staff, so they can better understand the needs of Native American students and better serve their learning environment.
