What is the Indian Education Act?

The Indian Education Act is a law enacted by both the New York State Legislature and the United States Congress to ensure that Native American children in New York receive a quality education. The Indian Education Act of 1974, also known as Public Law 93-638, provides a way for tribal governments to enter into contracts with the United States government to better serve their own Native American students with resources and services that they otherwise would not have access to. The Indian Education Act states that the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) must offer technical assistance and financial aid to Native American communities with the goal of providing a sufficient education for their children. The act also requires aspiring Native American teachers to seek special training and certification to teach in Native American schools. The Indian Education Act has been used to support dozens of Native American schools across the state, providing funding for additional resources, educational materials, and specialized staff to help Native American students succeed. This includes providing tutoring services, after-school programs, and culturally responsive curricula to promote a positive learning environment. Overall, the Indian Education Act is an important law that helps to give Native American children in New York the resources and support they need to achieve academic success. It demonstrates a commitment to providing access to quality education and a brighter future for these communities.
