What is the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act?

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) is a federal law that was passed in 1988 to regulate the gaming activities of Native American tribes in the United States. It regulates and governs the rights and responsibilities of tribes, state governments, and the federal government in regards to Native American gaming. The IGRA establishes the National Indian Gaming Commission to serve as the regulatory body for Indian gaming. It sets the rules and regulations that must be followed by tribes, state governments, and the federal government in order for Indian gaming to occur. The Commission has the authority to enforce the act and prosecute violations of its provisions. In New Hampshire, the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act governs the use of Native American land, resources, and gaming activities. The Act allows Tribes to conduct gaming operations on their own land, provided that they are acting in accordance with the IGRA. The Act also requires that Tribes enter into a compact with the state government in order to conduct gaming operations. The act ensures that Indian gaming is conducted in a responsible manner by requiring minimum standards for gaming operations. These standards include the provision of adequate consumer protections, effective internal control systems, and anti-money laundering requirements. It also requires that all revenues from Indian gaming be used for tribal government operations or donated to charitable organizations. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act has been criticized in some circles as being too restrictive and having too many bureaucratic obstacles. However, the Act has provided an important framework for Indian gaming and has allowed Native American tribes to benefit significantly from gaming operations.
