What is the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act?
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) is a federal law that was passed in 1990 to protect Native American cultural heritage. This Act applies to Native American graves, cultural items that are owned by the federal government, and items that have been taken from Native American burial sites. The NAGPRA requires museums, universities, and other federal agencies to inventory and identify Native American human remains and any related grave goods, such as funerary objects.
