What is the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act?
The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, or ICFPFA, is a law intended to protect Native American children and families in Washington State. It was passed in 1994 to address the severe problems of family violence, child abuse and neglect in Native American communities. The ICFPFA requires the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services to develop and implement a program to provide services to Native American children, families, and communities that are affected by family violence. The goal of the ICFPFA is to reduce and eventually eliminate family violence. The ICFPFA requires that the Department of Social and Health Services train law enforcement officers and social service providers about the types of family violence that occur in Indian communities. The law also requires that investigation and treatment of family violence must be culturally appropriate, and that training and services must be provided in the Native language of the tribe. In addition, the Act requires that tribal governments be provided with additional services to assist with investigations, prosecutions, and prevention of family violence. The Act also requires that funds be set aside to pay for services, such as counseling and education, that can help prevent family violence. The ICFPFA was passed to protect Native American children and families in Washington State, and to reduce the prevalence and severity of family violence in Native American communities. The law seeks to ensure that Native American children and families are able to access needed services and resources, so that they can live safer, healthier lives.
