What is the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act?

The Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) is a law passed by the United States Congress in 1996. This law is designed to provide tribes and Native American communities in Missouri with more control over their housing and community development needs. This law also ensures that Native Americans and their communities in Missouri receive fair and adequate housing assistance. The law authorizes the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide tribes and Native American communities with a variety of types of housing assistance. This assistance may include public housing grants, housing voucher programs, home owner assistance, and loan programs. It also authorizes the Department of the Interior (DOI) to assist tribes with economic development, land acquisition, job training, and other development services. The NAHASDA also includes provisions that ensure fair and equitable treatment of Native American communities in Missouri. This includes requiring state and local governments to consult with tribes on tribal housing assistance plans, making sure that tribal housing projects are given priority for federal funding, and requiring that tribes have access to local housing planning resources and funding. The Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act has helped to improve the lives of many Native American communities in Missouri. This law has given tribes the opportunity to take control of their housing needs and determine their own paths for development.
