What is the Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act?
The Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act (IETS Act) is a Texas law enacted in 1980 to provide employment and related training services to Native American citizens both on and off reservations. The IETS Act is designed to assist in the transition of Native Americans from joblessness and poverty to gainful employment and self-sufficiency. This act provides an avenue for improved economic and educational status for Native Americans, helping to create greater economic opportunity and social justice in the state. The IETS Act generates money from various sources, including the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). Funds are available through one-time grants and recurring grants for job training and placement programs. These grants are used to create job opportunities through job preparation classes and counseling. They are also used to fund career exploration services, job searches, resume writing, job skills and aptitude assessments, and related assistance. The IETS Act also provides outreach services and programs to ensure that Native Americans have access to services, such as public assistance programs, housing, health care, job search assistance, and other services they might need. It is intended to provide services that have a direct impact on the growth and development of Native Americans in the state of Texas. The goal is to make sure that Native Americans are able to take advantage of any employment and training opportunities available to them.
