What is the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act?
The Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act is a federal law that allows Native American tribes and organizations in the United States to assume more control over the management and funding of their education, health, and human services programs. The law was passed in 1975 in an effort to give Native Americans autonomy over their own affairs and express their sovereignty. The Act requires the federal government to enter into contracts and/or grants with Native American tribes or organizations. Through these agreements, Native Americans are able to receive funds from the federal government for specific uses, such as education, health, housing, cultural activities and infrastructure improvements. Native American tribes or organizations also gain the right to manage the funds and maintain the services provided by the tribal organization. This allows for Native American tribes to exercise their sovereignty and work towards their own self-determination and autonomy. In South Carolina, the law has opened up new opportunities for Native American tribes and organizations. It provides funds for education and health services, as well as cultural activities and infrastructure projects. This helps the Native American communities in South Carolina to access the resources and support they need to thrive and grow, providing them with the autonomy and self-determination they desire.
