How often should inspections be performed in a nursing home?
In Minnesota, nursing homes must have an inspection by the Minnesota Department of Health every 12 months. For higher-risk nursing homes, an inspection must be conducted twice a year. The Health Department must also investigate all reports of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of funds in nursing homes. The Department of Health also requires any nursing home with more than 15 beds to undergo a survey every 15 months by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This survey entails a review of the facility’s policies, procedures, and operations, and the Department of Health will give a score to the nursing home at the end of the survey. In addition to the regular inspections, the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center also must be contacted immediately if an incident of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation is reported. They will then investigate the incident and take action if necessary. To ensure that nursing home abuse and neglect remain rare in Minnesota, it is important that individuals in charge of nursing homes regularly inspect their facilities and properly report any incidents. Regular inspections and investigations are necessary to keep nursing home residents safe and healthy.
