How often should inspections be performed in a nursing home?

In New Jersey, nursing homes must be inspected at least once every 12-15 months, if the nursing home is participating in Medicare or Medicaid. Nursing homes that are non-Medicare/Medicaid or only partially participating must be inspected at least once every 24 months, or more frequently if needed. In addition to regular inspections, the New Jersey Department of Health requires that there be unannounced inspections as well. These unannounced inspections are intended to ensure that a nursing home is providing safe and acceptable care to its residents. The New Jersey Department of Health also requires that nursing homes maintain a regimen of documentation inspection and submission, as well as participate in inspection readiness exercises. Documentation inspection requires nursing homes to make sure that their documentation, such as personnel records and medical records, are up-to-date and organized. Submissions require the nursing home to provide the documents submitted to the New Jersey Department of Health in a timely manner. Inspection readiness exercises may be conducted for the purpose of preparing the nursing home for unannounced or scheduled inspections. Overall, nursing homes in New Jersey must be inspected at least once every 12-15 months, but may be inspected more often based on the type of nursing home and whether or not the nursing home is meeting the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Health. Nursing homes must also be prepared for unannounced inspections as well as regular inspections. All of these measures are necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of nursing home residents.
