What is the difference between a nursing home and an assisted living facility?
Nursing home and assisted living facility are both types of long-term care. The main difference between them is in the type and amount of care offered. In a nursing home, residents receive a higher level of medical care and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). Nursing homes are supervised and staffed by medical personnel such as doctors and nurses, providing around-the-clock medical care and assistance with ADLs for 24-hour supervision. This makes them a good option for people who require more care and support than an assisted living facility can provide. In an assisted living facility, residents have more freedom and independence than nursing home residents. This type of facility provides a less medicalized environment than nursing homes, offering services like meals, housekeeping, and reminders to take medications. In assisted living, services are not always available 24/7, meaning that residents have more control over their daily activities. Additionally, assisted living residents often have access to recreational activities and socialization opportunities with other residents. Ultimately, nursing homes and assisted living facilities provide different care and services. When choosing the best option for yourself or a loved one, it’s important to consider the type and amount of care needed.
