What is the difference between nursing home abuse and elder abuse?
Nursing home abuse and elder abuse are two types of abuse that can occur to individuals who are elderly or who are living in nursing homes. Both types of abuse involve elderly individuals who are being mistreated in some way, but there are differences between them. Nursing home abuse largely involves the mistreatment of elderly individuals who are living in a nursing home. This type of abuse can include physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect. Nursing home abuse also includes financial exploitation, when an elderly person has their money or possessions taken from them without their permission. Elder abuse is a broader term that covers abuse occurring outside of a nursing home or assisted living facility. Elder abuse can occur in a person’s own home, or in the home of a relative or caregiver. Elder abuse can include physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Elder abuse can also include abandonment, where an elderly person is left without care or support. In general, nursing home abuse is specific to elderly individuals who are living in nursing homes, while elder abuse applies to any type of mistreatment of elderly individuals, in any location. In both cases, it is important to recognize the signs of abuse and take the appropriate action if you suspect that someone is being abused.
