What is the difference between nursing home abuse and elder abuse?
Nursing home abuse and elder abuse are both serious issues that can cause harm to the elderly. In Minnesota, both forms of abuse are prohibited and are punishable by law. However, there is a difference between the two. Nursing home abuse is any intentional action or inaction that leads to suffering or harm to a resident of a nursing home. This can include physical abuse, sexual abuse, or mental/emotional abuse. It can also include the failure to provide adequate care, such as when the nursing home staff does not provide enough food or medicine to a resident. Elder abuse, on the other hand, is defined as any intentional act or omission that causes harm or distress to an older person. Elder abuse includes physical and sexual abuse, mental and emotional abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, and abandonment. It can also include any wrongful behavior by a caregiver, such as not providing enough food or leaving a person in a dangerous or unsanitary environment. Both nursing home abuse and elder abuse are serious issues that can cause physical and emotional harm to elderly people. It is important for caregivers and family members of the elderly to be aware of the signs of abuse and to take action if they suspect abuse is occurring. In Minnesota, both nursing home abuse and elder abuse are illegal and can result in harsh penalties.
