What is the difference between nursing home abuse and elder abuse?
The difference between nursing home abuse and elder abuse can be seen in their respective definitions. Nursing home abuse is defined as the mistreatment or neglect of a nursing home resident, or any behavior that harms, endangers, or causes distress to the resident. Nursing home abuse can take many forms, such as verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and financial abuse. Elder abuse, on the other hand, is defined as an act or omission that causes harm or risk of harm to an individual aged 60 and over, or exploitation of resources or services of an individual aged 60 and over. Elder abuse is also known as elder mistreatment and covers a wide range of behaviors and can include physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as financial exploitation. In Washington, laws have been set in place to protect and support victims of nursing home abuse and elder abuse. The laws and regulations governing the nursing home industry provide citizens with the necessary protections they need while living in long-term care facilities. Additionally, the state of Washington has adopted the Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Act, which specifically addresses the prevention, identification, and reporting of elder abuse and neglect.
