What is the difference between conventional and non-conventional oil and gas production?
The difference between conventional and non-conventional oil and gas production is the way in which the resources are extracted. Conventional production involves extracting oil and gas that is already near the surface. This involves drilling down into the Earth and using pumps to bring up the oil and gas to the surface. Non-conventional production involves more advanced technologies to access oil and gas from difficult to reach areas. This includes methods such as fracking, injection of liquid or gas into wells and horizontal drilling. These techniques can be used to access oil and gas from much deeper below the surface and from areas that may be harder to reach. In Georgia, the majority of oil and gas production is done through conventional methods at this time. Non-conventional methods are still relatively new in the state and are not yet widely used. As technology continues to advance, however, it is likely that non-conventional methods such as fracking will become more common in the state.
