What is the difference between conventional and non-conventional oil and gas production?
Conventional and non-conventional oil and gas production are two different methods of extracting natural resources from the ground. Conventional oil and gas production involves drilling wellbores directly into areas of the subsurface where resources are known to be present and extracting them through the wellbores. Conventional oil and gas production is typically done from a single wellbore and involves the use of extraction technologies such as pumps and pumping units. Non-conventional oil and gas production, on the other hand, involves extracting the resources from the subsurface without drilling wells. Non-conventional oil and gas production can involve techniques such as hydraulic fracturing, where pressurized fluids are injected into the subsurface to crack open oil and gas-bearing rocks. Another method of non-conventional oil and gas production is known as in-situ extraction, where a substance, such as steam, is inserted into an oil or gas deposit to make it easier to extract the resources. Both methods of oil and gas production are regulated by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. For both types of production, the regulations require a permit from the department, as well as reporting and monitoring of the operations. Both methods of oil and gas production are also subject to the same safety regulations and environmental protection measures.
