What is the difference between conventional and non-conventional oil and gas production?
The difference between conventional and non-conventional oil and gas production can be defined by the way in which the hydrocarbons (the fuel sources) are extracted. Conventional oil and gas production involves drilling deep into the earth and using specialized equipment to extract fossil fuels from natural geological formations. Non-conventional oil and gas production on the other hand involves different techniques such as fracking, horizontal drilling, and/or enhanced recovery techniques. Fracking is a technique that involves the injection of high-pressure fluids, typically mixtures of water, sand, and chemicals, into unconventional geological formations in order to create fractures that allow for the extraction of hydrocarbons. Horizontal drilling involves drilling horizontally or at an angle through unconventional geological formations in order to reach and extract hydrocarbons. Enhanced recovery Techniques are used to increase the productivity of oil and gas production from already produced wells by injecting chemicals or gases into the well in order to stimulate the production of hydrocarbons. In the state of Washington, conventional oil and gas production is regulated by the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and the Washington State Department of Ecology, while non-conventional oil and gas production is regulated by the Washington State Department of Ecology, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The regulations for non-conventional production are more extensive due to the controversial nature of fracking and other enhanced recovery techniques.
