Does parole or probation automatically terminate upon the completion of the sentence?
No. In Kansas, parole or probation does not automatically terminate upon the completion of the sentence. This is because parole or probation are used to help individuals who have been sentenced to a period of incarceration transition back into society and help ensure that they don’t return to criminal activity. Parole and probation are provided through the Kansas Department of Corrections. In order to receive parole or probation, individuals must be evaluated and found to be eligible for the program. Once they are accepted they must abide by certain rules, such as regularly reporting to their parole or probation officer, not possessing firearms, and admitting to any new offenses they may have committed. The length of parole or probation varies based on the individual and their sentence. Upon completion of the sentence, parolees and probationers must still complete their parole or probation term. Once the individual has served the period of parole or probation, they must formally be discharged by the parole board or the probation department. Upon discharge, the individual will no longer have to satisfy the terms and conditions of probation or parole.
