Does parole or probation automatically terminate upon the completion of the sentence?

In Massachusetts, parole and probation do not automatically terminate upon the completion of the sentence. When an individual is placed on either parole or probation, their sentence is typically served under the supervision of a Probation Officer. This means that if an individual is on parole or probation, they must comply with the rules and regulations of the Probation Officer in order to remain in good standing. If an individual violates their parole or probation, their parole or probation may be revoked or extended. Also, after completing the sentence, the individual may still be on parole or probation for a defined amount of time. The amount of time can vary depending on the individual offense, but typically the individual can remain on parole or probation for up to three years after the sentence expires. In Massachusetts, the completion of the sentence does not necessarily guarantee that parole or probation will end. The individual must still comply with all of the conditions assigned by the Probation Officer and meet the expectations of the court and community. Ultimately, it is up to the Probation Officer to determine if the individual has met all of the conditions and to decide if parole or probation should terminate.
