How does my parole or probation officer know if I have been arrested for a new offense?

When a person is on parole or probation in North Dakota, they are subject to regular supervision by their parole or probation officer. As part of this supervision, the parole or probation officer must be informed if the person has been arrested for a new offense. Often when a person is arrested they will be fingerprinted. This fingerprint process is designed to create a unique record of the person. This record is then entered into a database that is accessible by both the police and parole and probation officers. Additionally, the police will inform the parole or probation officer of any new arrests. If the parole or probation officer learns that a person has been arrested for a new offense, they can take action. Depending on the severity of the violation they may impose stricter rules, increase the frequency of check-ins, or even revoke the probation or parole altogether and issue a warrant for the person’s arrest. It is important for people on parole or probation to understand that they are constantly being monitored and should abide by all rules and regulations associated with their supervised release. Failing to do so could result in serious consequences.
