Can I possess a firearm while on parole or probation?

In Massachusetts, it is illegal to possess a firearm while on parole or probation. According to Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 269 Section 10(a): “No person who is on probation or parole, including persons on furlough or home incarceration, may possess or carry a firearm”. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is also very clear about the prohibitions on firearms possession for individuals on probation or parole. Specifically, the Federal Gun Control Act prohibits any person who currently is under indictment or who has been convicted of a felony in any court from possessing a firearm. This includes individuals on probation or parole for a felony conviction. Violating the federal and state firearms prohibitions can result in serious consequences. If an individual on parole or probation is found to have possessed a firearm, they can be sentenced to at least one year in prison. In addition, parole or probation officers can revoke probation or parole in the case of a firearms violation. Therefore, it is very important for individuals on parole or probation to be aware of the laws and restrictions regarding firearms. It is crucial to abide by the prohibitions on firearms possession in order to avoid any potential legal complications.
