What is the difference between probation and jail time?
The difference between probation and jail time in Georgia is significant. Probation is a sentence imposed by the court that requires an offender to remain under the court’s supervision, usually for an extended period of time. Probation usually requires the offender to follow certain rules, pay fines and/or restitution, and participate in programs such as drug or alcohol counseling. Jail time, on the other hand, is an order of the court that requires the convicted person to spend a certain amount of time in a jail or prison facility. Jail time, however, completely removes the offender from the community and requires them to stay in a correctional facility for a set amount of time.
