What is the difference between probation and jail time?

In Michigan, probation and jail time are two different types of punishment assigned to those found guilty of a crime. Probation is a court order sentence that allows an offender to remain in the community instead of being placed in jail. This type of sentence is usually given to someone who hasn’t committed a serious or violent crime. Offenders sentenced to probation must obey all rules set by the court. This could include meeting regularly with a probation officer, taking drug tests, attending counseling, performing community service, and not committing any additional crimes. Jail time, on the other hand, is a court order sentence that requires offenders to serve a certain amount of time in jail. A jail sentence is usually given to someone who has committed a violent or serious crime. During their jail sentence, offenders will be kept in custody with limited or no freedom, as they serve their sentence. The two punishments serve different purposes. Probation allows those who have committed a minor crime to remain in the community, be supervised, and be held accountable for their actions. Jail time, on the other hand, is meant to act as a deterrent for more serious crimes, by punishing offenders and removing them from the community.
