What happens if I am found guilty of violating parole or probation?

If you are found guilty of violating parole or probation in California, the consequences will depend on the severity of the violation. Generally speaking, the judge can choose to either revoke your parole or probation, or you may be given additional conditions to comply with. If your parole or probation is revoked, this means that the judge believes that you are no longer eligible to remain in the community and you will be sent to prison to finish serving the rest of your sentence. Depending on your violation, the amount of time you will spend in prison may be the remainder of your sentence or it may be a lesser amount of time. If the judge decides not to revoke your parole or probation, then you may be given a warning, a stiffer probation or parole, or additional conditions which may include jail time. You may also be required to attend drug or alcohol treatment programs or anger management courses. You may also have to participate in community service or find work. No matter what your sentence is, it is important to make sure that you comply with all of the conditions of your parole or probation to avoid any repeat violations or worse consequences.
