What happens if a man denies paternity after signing an acknowledgment?

In Nebraska, if a man signs an acknowledgment of paternity, he is legally considered to be the father of the child. However, if the man later decides to deny paternity after signing the acknowledgment, then the situation can be more complicated. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services may refer the case to the court to establish the paternity of the child. In this case, the court may order the man to submit to genetic testing. The results of the test will be used to resolve the dispute and determine whether or not he should be considered the legal father of the child. If the test results indicate that he is the father, then the man will be obligated to fulfill his parental responsibilities. That may include providing child support and being legally responsible for making decisions involving the child. On the other hand, if the man is not the father, the court will issue an order denying him paternity. The court may also order the man to reimburse the state for any costs associated with conducting the genetic testing. In either case, the man’s acknowledgment of paternity will be removed from the child’s birth certificate. The removal of the acknowledgment of paternity does not change the legal father of the child, but rather, it just removes the acknowledgment from the birth certificate.
