What documents must be filed to open probate?

In Minnesota, a probate proceeding must be opened in order to handle the distribution of property from a deceased individual’s estate. An inventory of the deceased person’s assets and liabilities must also be filed along with the petition. This inventory must indicate the value of the assets and the amount of any debts that must be paid off before the property can be distributed. Finally, a proposed Notice of Probate must also be filed. This document notifies every known heir of the death of the deceased person and gives them information about how to file a claim to the estate. Once all of these documents have been filed, the probate proceedings may begin.
