What is an administrator?

An administrator in North Carolina probate law is the person or company appointed by a court to oversee the distribution of a deceased person’s estate. Administrators are appointed when the deceased person did not leave a will or if the will does not name an executor. The administrator is responsible for ensuring that all of the deceased person’s debts and taxes are paid and that the assets are distributed in accordance with the laws of the state and the wishes of the deceased person. The administrator is often referred to a fiduciary, meaning that they must act in the best interests of the beneficiaries. If the administrator fails to fulfill their duties, they may be held liable for any losses or damages.
