What is the definition of a pedestrian accident?

A pedestrian accident is a type of traffic accident in which a person traveling on foot (the pedestrian) is injured or killed by either a motor vehicle, bicycle, or other type of vehicle. Pedestrian accidents are one of the most common types of traffic accidents in Washington state, and can occur in many different ways. For example, a motor vehicle may fail to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, run a red light and hit a pedestrian, or simply not see a pedestrian in the roadway. Bicycles can also be involved in pedestrian accidents if the cyclist is traveling too fast, fails to signal when turning, or does not pay attention to what is going on around them. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents can be extremely serious, and may even result in permanent injury or death. It is important for both pedestrians and motorists to remain aware of their surroundings and practice good safety habits when traveling in Washington.
