How are returns from private equity investments taxed?
In Georgia, private equity investments are subject to taxation just like other investments. When it comes to tax implications of private equity investments, there are two main categories: income and capital gains. For income taxes, private equity investors are subject to the same income tax rates as any other investment income. Depending on the investor’s income, this rate can range from 0% to 20% for federal taxes and 0% to 6% for state taxes. For capital gains, these investments are generally taxed at the federal and state level at a much lower rate. This is due to the fact that the investor has held the equity investment for more than one year prior to selling, qualifying them for the long-term capital gains rate. The federal long-term capital gains rate is 20%, while the Georgia state rate is determined based on the investor’s income. In addition to these income and capital gains taxes, investors are responsible for other taxes such as self-employment and FICA taxes which are paid in order to cover Social Security and Medicare. Private equity investors may also be responsible for other taxes such as state excise tax, state withholding tax, and state inheritance tax. Overall, it is important for investors to be knowledgeable on the taxation of private equity investments in order to properly plan for any taxes that may be due as a result of the investment. As always, investors should consult with a tax professional for any specific questions that they may have related to their private equity investments.
