What are the differences between private equity and venture capital?
Private Equity (PE) and Venture Capital (VC) are two important sectors of the investment market, and both involve funding businesses and organizations in exchange for ownership or management of the company. The biggest difference between the two types of capital is that Private Equity investments are usually made in established companies, while Venture Capital investments are typically made in startup businesses. Private Equity firms provide capital to companies that may not be performing as well as they used to, or may have hit a plateau in their growth. They look to help companies become more profitable and efficient, and usually take a longer-term approach in their investments. On the other hand, Venture Capital firms focus more on new startup companies, often providing capital to entrepreneurs and startups to help them get off the ground. VC’s typically invest in a company early on in its life cycle. In New Jersey, Private Equity and Venture Capital are regulated by the Division of Investment’s Bureau of Securities and are required to register with the state before operating. In order to properly manage the investments of their clients, both types of firms must continually monitor changes in the market and regulatory landscape in order to comply with all applicable laws in the state.
