What is the difference between private equity and angel investors?
Private equity and angel investors are both forms of investing, but there are important differences between them. Private equity is often capital that comes from large institutional investors, such as venture capitalists and private equity firms, which pool money from their clients to invest in businesses. Private equity investments involve the contribution of both money and expertise in the form of a team of professionals, who work to manage and grow the investments. Private equity is typically used to acquire and restructure businesses, or to grow existing ones. Angel investors, on the other hand, are usually wealthy individuals who provide funding to early-stage companies in exchange for a piece of ownership. Unlike private equity, angels are usually focused on helping an initial idea become a viable business, and bring their own expertise to bear in the form of advice and mentorship. Angel investors tend to invest smaller amounts than private equity and do not require a team of professionals to manage the investment, as private equity does. In Washington, angel investors, as well as private equity firms, must abide by the state’s private equity laws, which regulate the practices of these firms, encourage full disclosure from investors, and protect investors from potential losses that may result from investing.
