How has the regulation of pharmaceuticals changed over the years?
Pharmaceutical law in Alabama has changed in many ways over the years. In the past, the regulation of pharmaceuticals was much more lax than it is today. There used to be fewer restrictions on the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of pharmaceutical products, and there was less enforcement of laws concerning these activities. Nowadays, there are more controls on pharmaceuticals in Alabama and nationwide. The Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) of 2013 introduced tougher restrictions and enforcement for pharmaceuticals in the United States. This act is designed to prevent counterfeit drugs from entering the supply chain. It requires manufacturers and distributors to provide specific information when transferring pharmaceuticals and subjects them to audits and inspections. The DSCSA also requires the tracking of prescription drugs from the time of manufacture to the time of sale. Furthermore, the Alabama Board of Pharmacy (ABP) was established in the mid-70s to regulate the practice of pharmacy in the state. The ABP enforces rules, regulations, and laws concerning the storage, handling, sale, compounding, and dispensing of drugs. This board also works with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to control the distribution and sale of controlled substances, such as narcotics, depressants, and stimulants. All of these changes and regulations ensure that pharmaceuticals are distributed, sold, and used safely. The new rules and regulations have made the industry more secure and have helped ensure the safety and effectiveness of drugs for Alabamans.
