What is the law regarding the distribution of pharmaceuticals?
In Washington, the distribution of pharmaceuticals is regulated by the Washington State Board of Pharmacy. This board is responsible for establishing rules and regulations to protect the public health and safety. To be able to distribute pharmaceuticals, a person must be licensed as a pharmacist, registered with the Washington State Board of Pharmacy, and meet the criteria of a licensed facility. All legal distribution of pharmaceuticals must be done through a licensed pharmacy or medical practitioner. Pharmacies must keep accurate records of all drugs dispensed and must complete a Drug Inventory Control Form for each drug that is being dispensed. The prescription must be written by a licensed medical practitioner and contain all the information needed for the pharmacist to properly dispense the medications. All medications must be properly labeled and stored according to label or prescription instructions. All drugs must be stored separately from other medication and must not be within reach of children or unauthorized personnel. The pharmacist must also make sure that the drugs are not expired, adulterated, or contaminated. In Washington, it is illegal to distribute any prescription drugs without a prescription from a licensed medical practitioner. It is also illegal to sell any prescription drugs without a valid pharmacy license. Anyone found guilty of violating these laws can be subject to severe penalties including criminal charges.
