What are the regulations pertaining to the storage of drugs?
In Washington, the regulations pertaining to the storage of drugs are largely outlined in the Washington Administrative Code (WAC). According to WAC 246-895-370, drugs must be stored in a location that is protected from theft, tampering, and unauthorized entry. Furthermore, all drugs must be kept in their original containers and stored in a secure location at a temperature between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, unless otherwise specified by the drug’s manufacturer or the Board. Additionally, any drugs that are in a liquid form must be stored in such a way that they are not subject to accidental spillage, and all drugs must be clearly labeled with the name and expiration date of the drug. Finally, in order to ensure proper storage of drugs, licensed pharmacists and other personnel involved in the storage of drugs must be trained in how to properly store them. This includes knowledge of how to check expiration dates, how to properly store drugs in a secure location, and any other pertinent regulations set out by the Board. By abiding by these regulations, pharmacies can help ensure the safety of those who take their medications.
