Are there any restrictions on the prescribing of opioids?
Yes, there are restrictions on the prescribing of opioids in California. The California state legislature has put in place a series of laws designed to limit the amount of opioids that can be prescribed. For example, the California Pain Management, Opioid Prescribing, and Palliative Care Act, which was passed in 2018, places restrictions on prescribing and dispensing quantities of opioids for acute pain, which is any pain lasting less than three months. The Act also requires that physicians and other healthcare providers obtain a special waiver in order to prescribe more than a certain amount of opioids to a single patient or use opioids in a manner that is not consistent with best practices. The Act also prohibits physicians from prescribing more than a seven-day supply of opioids to outpatient patients without specific documentation. Finally, the California Department of Public Health has implemented a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) in order to track opioid prescriptions. The PDMP is designed to help physicians recognize potential problems with patients that may be abusing or misusing opioids. It is also intended to alert physicians and other healthcare providers when a patient may be “doctor shopping,” or visiting multiple physicians to obtain more opioids.
