Are there any restrictions or limitations on the use of robots to dispense prescription drugs?

In California, the dispensing of prescription drugs must be done by a Pharmacist or Pharmacist Intern and cannot be done by a robot. While robots can be used for other non-dispensing activities, such as stocking shelves and labeling bottles, they are not allowed to actually dispense medication. The law requires that a Pharmacist review the prescription order and check to make sure it is safe and appropriate before it is dispensed. This review cannot be done by a robot, as it requires a human element that cannot be replicated by a machine. Robots can, however, be used to help Pharmacists with the dispensing process. For example, robots can be used to accurately and quickly count pills or measure out liquids. The Pharmacist can then review the counts and measurements to ensure they are correct and in the proper strength before they are given to the patient. Overall, the use of robots may be helpful in improving the efficiency of the dispensing process, but due to safety concerns, the actual dispensing of medication must be done by a Pharmacist or Pharmacist Intern in California.
